Manchester United cruise past Nottingham Forest for a winning start to their U18 Premier League campaign.

Sam Murray and Sam Mather starred as Manchester United got their U18 Premier League North season off to a flyer with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Carrington.

The duo grabbed assists for goalscorers Manni Norkett, Ethan Williams and Ethan Wheatley as United bested Forest as they did in last season’s FA Youth Cup final.

United started the game quickly, catching Forest with their high press and they would’ve taken the lead early on if not for a brilliant late block from Jimmy Sinclair to deny Norkett.

Mather caused Forest all sorts of problems with his mazy runs from midfield and he almost put United ahead in the tenth minute when broke through on goal but his shot was saved.

A few minutes later Mather was at it again beating two players before slipping through Norkett who confidently tucked the ball into the near post.

After taking the lead United slowed down their play allowing Finley McAllister to dictate the game by dropping deep to collect the ball before driving at the Forest midfield.

The 16-year-old did exactly this in first-half stoppage time to start the move for United’s second as they shifted the ball from right to left to find Murray.

The left-back then produced a perfect cross for Williams to volley home to mark his debut at U18 level with a goal and double the lead for Travis Binnion’s side.

Williams almost got another in the second half when he was the quickest to react to a loose ball in the Forest penalty area but Aaron Bott produced a strong save to deny him.

United grabbed their third in the 75th minute. Murray was heavily involved again pinching the ball from Justin Hanks before finding substitute Wheatley who produced a smart turn and finish.

Plenty to ponder for Forest manager Warren Joyce ahead of welcoming Leeds United next week where they will be hoping to bounce back.

As for United a comfortable three points, the performances of Murray, Mather and McAllister in particular will have pleased Binnion.
