Liverpool best Manchester United in thrilling encounter

Ben Doak produced another stunning display as Liverpool overcame old rivals Manchester United with a 4-2 victory in the U18 Premier League North.

Goals from Terence McLaughlin-Miles, James McConnell and a brace from Trent Kone-Doherty earned the points for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side.

United pulled goals back through Sam Murray and a late Manni Norkett penalty but it was not enough to avoid their first defeat of the season.

Doak was the star of the show and his pressing almost gave Liverpool the lead after two minutes when he pinched the ball and found Louie Koumas who fired just wide.

The Reds went ahead five minutes later when a long ball from ‘keeper Fabian Mrozek wasn’t dealt with by United allowing Kone-Doherty to break in behind and round the keeper before slotting home.

Doak was involved again as the Reds thought they should’ve had a penalty after half an hour when the young Scotsman was caught by Sonny Aljofree but the referee waved it away.

United grew into the game after a slow start and almost equalised when Ethan Williams found space out wide and picked out Max Oyedele but he was denied by Mrozek.

A minute later they were 2-0 down as Liverpool hit them on the counter. Kone-Doherty grabbed his second finishing into the gaping net from Doak’s low cross.

Mrozek has been training with the first team recently and it showed as he got down well to save Louis Jackson’s header and maintain Liverpool’s lead.

Travis Binnion opted to do his half-time team talk on the pitch rather than in the dressing room and it appeared to work as United pulled one back two minutes into the second half.

Murray’s corner was headed onto the bar by Aljofree and United kept it alive and pulled it back across to Murray who smashed it in.

Five minutes later Liverpool’s two-goal lead was restored when Michael Laffey’s free-kick evaded the charging Tom Wooster allowing McLaughlin-Miles to head home.

Shortly after it was four when Doak went on another mazy run and found Koumas who laid it back for McConnell who fired into the bottom corner.

United fought hard to get back in the game but Mrozek was in inspired form producing multiple stunning saves.

The Pole was finally beaten again when substitute Ranel Young tripped Murray in the box and Norkett fired the resulting penalty into the top left corner.
