Manchester City complete another late comeback

Man City U18 celebrating victory

Matthew Whittingham completed Manchester City’s second dramatic comeback of the week as they overcame Liverpool in the U18 Premier League.

Joel Ndala put City ahead before Liverpool turned it around thanks to a Louie Koumas brace and a goal from Trent Kone-Doherty before City produced a comeback the first team would be proud of.

Second-half goals from Justin Oboavwoduo, Jayden Heskey and Matthew Whittingham won it for City in a game that was somehow more dramatic than their European tie with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was in attendance and he would have been impressed with the quality on show, particularly with the crossing from both sides as we know he is a master himself.

City took the lead after 24 minutes when Ashton Muir collected the ball out wide and drove into the box before cutting the ball back for Ndala who tucked it into the net.

Liverpool equalised shortly after when Koumas got on the end of a Francis Gymiah cross but saw his header brilliantly saved by George Murray-Jones before tapping home the rebound.

Murray-Jones gifted the Reds the lead in the 37th minute when he took too long on the ball allowing Koumas to block his clearance which then fell perfectly to Kone-Doherty to roll into the empty net.

Liverpool extended their lead early in the second half when Ben Doak, who was recently called up to Scotland U21s, skinned his man out wide and drilled in a low cross which was tapped home by Koumas.

The young Englishman, who turns 17 on Monday, continuing his incredible form with two goals and an assist following his first-ever UEFA Youth League goal against Ajax in midweek.

City pulled one back after 68 minutes when Whittingham was released in behind and whipped in a wonderful low cross which was tapped in by Oboavwoduo at the far post.

Momentum was whipped into City’s favour and they equalised eight minutes later when Nico O’Reilly’s header from a cross was blocked but fell perfectly to Heskey to finish off.

The young forward, the son of England legend Emile, marked his debut at the U18 level with a crucial goal and a smart reaction finish reminiscent of his father.

City completed the turnaround in the 81st minute when Oboavwoduo got in behind Gymiah and produced a perfect drilled cross for Whittingham to finish, returning the favour for his earlier goal.

Doak was forced into a quiet match by his standards but he showed another side to his game as he regularly tracked back to support the defence and dealt with his defensive duties well.

Ndala added another goal to his tally following his last-minute winner in the midweek which takes him to five goals and maintains his record of scoring in every game he features in at the U18 level this season.
