After solid performances against Greenhouse Pioneers and Loughborough Universities division one team in the preseason, The Charnwood Riders struggled in their competitive opener as they lost 97-58 to the Loughborough Riders in the opening round of the KitKing trophy.

Despite the onslaught from the Loughborough side, both Lamarana Diallo and Dan Hadley scored 28 of Charnwood’s 58 points, with the pair having 14 points each.

The duo linked up together for numerous offensive buckets, with Hadley being the standout floor general for his side even though the game was running away from the young Riders.

Charnwood started the game strong with Diallo continuing his scoring form after 30 points in his previous game against the Greenhouse Pioneers. The strong forward looked to have matched the physically from the Loughborough side in the first quarter, leading to some key baskets which left his side only being down 20-12 after ten minutes.

However, from the blow of the whistle at the start of the second quarter, Loughborough took control of the game with key baskets from Edward Onyla and Conor O’reilly who both had ten each and put the game out of reach by halftime.

Former Charnwood player and Team GB under 18’s international Lane Campbell was superb off the bench for Loughborough and finished the night with 15 points after some electrifying dunks and deadeye threes.

Justin Hedley capped off the evening with an almost perfect night from the field after scoring 8 baskets from 11 tries, which left him on 23 points for the evening and leaving the full-time result at 97-58 to Loughborough.

The 40-point defeat is a big wake-up call to the young Charnwood team that is going into their league campaign which starts at the beginning of next month.
