UEFA Youth League: Manchester City progress

Manchester City have qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League despite a second half brace from Goktan Gurpuz holding them to a 3-3 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

The German U19 international scored two wonder strikes to cancel out goals from Will Dickson, Nico O’Reilly and Abedire Mebude after Paris Brunner had opened the scoring for Dortmund.

City went into the game knowing they needed just a point to confirm their place in the knockout stages while Dortmund were desperate to close the gap to Copenhagen in the second.

The Germans made the perfect start, taking the lead after just 62 seconds when Lion Semic stood up a cross to the back post which was met by Brunner who looped his header into the top corner.

City responded well to going behind and got their equaliser in the 24th minute when Carlos Borges broke down the right and pulled back for Oscar Bobb who saw his shot saved.

The ball fell kindly back to the feet of Borges who fired a cross-cum-shot across the face of goal which was tapped home by Dickson for his third goal of the competition.

The Citizens almost went in front shortly after when Bobb played through Mebude who fired an effort off the post before the rebound fell for Bobb but he fired over from close range.

City went in front in the 40th minute following some patient build-up before Dickson flicked a ball around the corner for O’Reilly who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

They doubled their lead two minutes later when Mebude collected the ball from Ezra Carrington and weaved his way through three defenders before firing home from a tight angle.

Dortmund pulled a goal back 75 seconds after the interval as Goktan Gurpuz caught City sleeping in the middle of the park before driving forward and unleashing a stunning strike into the top corner.

The German side equalised in the 63rd minute when Gurpuz turned his man out wide before he cut inside and curled an incredible effort into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

It was clear both sides were content with the spoils being shared as neither wanted to risk losing the game, resulting in a quiet last half an hour.

The draw confirms Man City’s place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League and sees them through as top of the group while Dortmund need to beat Copenhagen next week to progress.
