Premier League Cup: Alex Gilbert brace inspires Brentford win

Alex Gilbert with ball

Late Tommi O’Reilly stunner isn’t quite enough for Villa as clinical Alex Gilbert sees the bees to the top of Group D in the PL Cup.

The bees made it two wins from two in the Premier League Cup with victories against Blackburn Rovers and now Aston Villa, leaving them at the top of Group D.

With 35 minutes on the clock, Tristan Crama played the ball across the box to Ryan Trevitt who flicked the ball on for Gilbert to calmly finish and give the resilient Brentford side the lead.

A mix up at the back for Villa allowed Gilbert in behind to clinch his second goal of the game as he moved past James Wright and slotted home from outside the box just before the hour mark.

With ten minutes to play, the exciting O’Reilly cut inside onto his left foot and rifled his shot into the top left-hand corner to bring Villa within touching distance in stunning fashion.

In added time substitute Kyreece Lisbie beat the tight angle and finished with composure into the far corner to seal the victory for Brentford.

Trevitt had a big impact on the first half causing several problems for the Villa defenders and testing Wright on a couple of occasions.

A great chance came for Villa after 14 minutes as Seb Revan whipped the ball in finding O’Reilly on the penalty spot, who couldn’t quite guide his header on target.

Kerr Smith showed his athleticism throughout the match by driving the ball into the Brentford half at speed opening the pitch up for Villa.

Brentford showed discipline by being difficult to break down at the back, protecting their lead from a hearty Aston Villa side.

Villa kept the pressure on in the second half and put on an admirable display, but it wasn’t enough to get past a well-structured Brentford.

The bees will be pleased to make it two wins from two in this competition however, Villa are still without a victory since they beat Sunderland on the 15th of August.
