UEFA Youth League: Liverpool beaten in Amsterdam

Trent Kone-Doherty shoots football

A first career goal in Europe for Trent Kone-Doherty was not enough to avoid Liverpool suffering their first UEFA Youth League defeat of the season 3-1 at the hands of Ajax.

First-half goals from Jaydon Banel and Gabriel Misehouy put the Reds behind, Kone Doherty then halved the deficit before David Kalokoh finished off the game after the interval.

Liverpool went into the game having already qualified for the knockout stages but needing a point to ensure they go through as top of the group whereas Ajax knew a victory would see them through alongside the Reds.

Ajax took the lead in the 14th minute when Raphael Sarfo got in behind the Liverpool backline and delivered a low cross for Banel who tucked it away into the bottom corner.

The Dutch side controlled the majority of the first half and went close to a second in the 28th minute when Stanis Idumbo pulled back for Oualid Agougli but his effort was well blocked by Jarell Quansah.

Ajax scored their second 10 minutes later in a similar manner to their first when Sarfo again found space and drilled a low ball across the crowded box which evaded everyone except Misehouy who rolled it into the net.

Barry Lewtas named a rotated side due to various injury and suspension issues and that had a clear effect with Liverpool being off the pace for the bulk of the first half.

However, they pulled a goal back in the 44th minute when Ben Doak twisted and turned his way through the Ajax defence but crossing for Trent Kone-Doherty who headed in from a yard out.

Ajax restored their two-goal lead in the 63rd minute when substitute Kalokoh drove into the Liverpool box and got a shot away which deflected off Luke Chambers and looped over Luke Hewitson into the net.

Frank Peereboom’s side produced a professional display to see out the game and the victory means they join Liverpool in the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League.

Liverpool go into their match with Napoli next week needing a point to confirm top spot but if they suffer defeat and Ajax beat Rangers then the Dutch side will overtake them.
