Jordan Felgate Appointed Head of Academy Goalkeeping at Norwich City

Jordan Felgate has joined Norwich City as Head of Academy Goalkeeping after a five-year spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Felgate makes the move to East Anglia having gained experience at several EFL academies such as Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. As well as working with Stockport County’s first team and youth goalkeepers.

Jordan Felgate told EliteScholars: “I’m really excited about taking the Head of Academy Goalkeeping role at Norwich City, it’s a massive club with a lot of history. After 5-6 years with Blackburn, I just felt that this was a really good progression for me in my coaching career and I’ve been really impressed with the facilities and staff at Norwich.”

Jordan Felgate takes pride in the fact Blackburn’s goalkeeping department has become renowned for producing first-team standard goalkeepers and spoke highly of his time at Rovers. He ran the goalkeeping operation from U18s to pre-academy forging a pathway for promising young goalkeepers and was pivotal to the success of Rovers’ goalkeeping programme. However, he believes that now is the right time in his career to make the change.

“I just felt I had been with Blackburn for a number of years now and we have built what has been a successful goalkeeping department with some getting international recognition and managing to get 3 of the last 4 goalkeepers through to professional contracts at the club.

I loved my time at Blackburn but felt the opportunity to take this role with Norwich was too good to turn down and develop my career further, a different environment to challenge myself and start from scratch again was something I needed to do.”

Jordan Felgate has spoken highly of Norwich City’s facilities and of the club in general: “After seeing the facilities and meeting the staff at the club, they couldn’t have been more welcoming and supportive, you get to see what an amazing club Norwich City is. A real family club as well, they have been supportive of myself and my family moving down and relocating from the northwest.

The environment at Norwich and facilities are first class, with no disrespect to Blackburn, there’s a huge difference in terms of facilities and investment by the club. I’ve been really impressed in the way everyone has been so welcoming and friendly and there’s a real positive environment at the training ground in terms of developing the players at the academy and how we do this.”

“The facilities are unbelievable, and the club want to give you the best possible and be as supportive as possible in order for us to do our jobs to develop players for this club. There’s a really good link from first team down to create pathways and opportunities at the club.”

It is safe to say Felgate learned a lot from his time at Blackburn and even mentioned the impact of Ben Benson as an important figure in the success of their goalkeeping department.

“I believe I have learned a lot at Blackburn and in my previous roles, Ben Benson the first team GK at Blackburn was really supportive in terms of wanting to develop players from the academy having been in my role previously as well and we linked well in wanting to develop the goalkeepers.

I’ve learned how to best manage the department staff to work with the goalkeepers at the club to make sure they enjoy coming into the academy first and foremost, to make sure they learn as much as they can and where they buy into what we are trying to build at Norwich in creating a positive enjoyable environment. This comes with being as organised and honest as possible with a clear philosophy on what we as staff expect from the goalkeepers and deliver that with the sessions we do with them. I’m really looking forward to getting started with developing the goalkeepers at the club.”

Felgate will be looking to make the same kind of impact on Norwich’s young goalkeepers as he did with those at Blackburn and the Canaries will know what a talented coach they have on their hands.

Jordan Felgate added: “I’ve really enjoyed my time so far at the club and am looking forward to getting started in the role properly in the coming weeks.”
