UEFA Youth League: Liverpool through to the last 16

Luke Chambers was the star of the show as Liverpool thrashed Napoli 5-0 to finish top of their group and secure their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League.

Chambers grabbed a goal and two assists as the Reds ran riot in the second-half, scoring four goals in 15 minutes to sweep aside the Italians.

Louie Koumas opened the scoring in the first-half before Ben Doak and Chambers added goals shortly after the break. Trent Kone-Doherty then scored a quickfire brace to put the win beyond any doubt.

Liverpool went into the game having already qualified for the knockout stages but needing a point to confirm they go through as top of the group and go straight to the last 16.

Napoli, on the other hand, came into this clash knowing they were already out and could finish no higher than bottom after picking up just one point from their first five group matches.

Liverpool took the lead in the 28th minute when Chambers drilled a low cross for Melkamu Frauendorf who got a shot away which deflected off Koumas and into the back of the net for the forward’s tenth goal of the season.

The Reds doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Doak received the ball out wide from Chambers before skipping past two defenders and firing into the far corner for his fourth goal of the competition.

They scored the third five minutes later when Doak collected a short corner and danced through two challenges before laying the ball back for Luke Chambers who drilled it into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

Liverpool scored again in the 63rd minute when Frauendorf’s shot was spilt by the Napoli keeper. Koumas slipped as he went to tuck home the rebound but Kone-Doherty was on hand to turn it in.

It was 5-0 three minutes later when Kone-Doherty collected a ball in behind from Lee Jonas and beat his man before firing the ball across the keeper and into the net.

The victory sees Liverpool confirm their place at the top of Group A and sees them qualify straight through to the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League, avoiding the need for a playoff game.
