Crystal Palace exit U18 Premier League Cup

Crystal Palace U18 fell to a 5 – 2 defeat against Leeds United in the U18 Premier League Cup. As the young Eagles failed to progress to the next round. Despite consolation goals from Junior Dixon and Adler Nascimento.

Crystal Palace came into this game knowing that a draw will be enough to send them through to the next round. On the other hand, Leeds United were already eliminated from the competition

Leeds United made a fast start as they took the lead in the 2nd minute through Marley Wilson. A well-worked cross from the left arrived in the path of Max McFadden, who failed to connect with his shot properly. However, the ball bounced around before finding Wilson, who drilled home from close range.

Ten minutes later, Junior Dixon thought he had given Crystal Palace an equaliser, as he tapped in a rebound from close range. However, it was ruled out for offside.

Dixon got the equaliser for his side. It was a nice combination of build-up play between him, Vonnte Williams and Basilio Socoliche. The latter’s one-touch pass fell into Dixon who comfortably slotted past Mahady’s near post to give his side the equaliser.

Leeds restored their lead in the 26th minute scored by Lleyton Brown. Shala saved an effort from Luca Thomas, but the rebound fell to Brown who tucked it away with a first-time effort.

In the 34th minute, Brown got his brace and Leeds third goal of the afternoon. Dan Toulson’s cross from the left reached Brown as he arrived into the box where he poked his shot into the bottom right corner.

Shortly after, Thomas got himself onto the scoresheet, adding his sides fourth goal. Charlie Crew looped the ball over the Palace defence and fell into the path of Thomas who slotted it home from inside the box.

A couple of minutes before half time Vonnte Williams was shown a red card for a bad challenge tackling the ball.

Just before the hour mark, Crystal Palace halved the deficit to 4 – 2, as Adler Nascimento scored a second for Rob Quinn’s side. Joe Gibbard drove towards the goal after initially winning the ball inside Leeds’s half. He then played in Dixon who then drove a low cross through the face of goal into the path of Nascimento who powered his shot into the net.

Leeds United scored their fifth goal with 15 minutes remaining. Crew’s shot inside the box took a massive deflection off Caleb Kporha, before going in the net sending Shala the wrong way.

The fifth goal for Leeds United damaged Crystal Palace’s chances of qualifying for the next round. As the final whistle blew although, Rob Quinn’s side finished second in their group it wasn’t enough for them to progress as runners-up.
