Leeds came into the game off the back of a defeat to Crewe Alexandra in the Papa John’s Trophy, where they lost 2-1 on penalties. Newcastle drew 1-1 against bitter rivals Sunderland last time out, where Sunderland’s goalkeeper equalised in the 94th minute.

After just 48 seconds Kris Moore got on the end of a fantastic cross from Charlie Allen and he guided his header past Jude Smith to give Leeds a perfect start.

Six minutes later Newcastle responded, as Josh Scott found himself in behind and calmly placed his shot in at the near post following a long ball over the top by Jamie Milley.

Three minutes into the second half, Cody Drameh played a great ball across to Max Dean who won his battle with the defender to push the ball past Smith. Putting the home side back in front.

Minutes later Leeds capitalised on a Newcastle defensive mishap, Joseph Snowden intercepted and played the ball to Dean who scored into an open net to extend his sides lead.

The visitors would not lie down as Harry Barclay drove his shot into the far corner from inside the box to put the Magpies back in touching distance.

In the 67th minute, Dean completed his hattrick thanks to a perfect pass from Snowden who showed great vision to put his teammate one on one with the goalkeeper, and the clinical striker slotted home.

Leeds United now find themselves without a match until the 9th of January where they will face Nottingham Forest in the PL2 Division 2. Newcastle on the other hand will return to action next week in the PL Cup, where they will travel to Bristol City.
