Nico O’Reilly put City ahead then Ethan Williams equalised after the interval. A goal from Manni Norkett and a penalty from James Nolan put United in front before Matthew Whittingham grabbed a late consolation goal.

The two teams played out a feisty encounter which saw Jack Kingdon receive a straight red card in the second half as well as six yellow cards being handed out during the match.

City almost took the lead after four minutes when Whittingham found space out wide to drill a low ball to the far post for Farid Alfa-Ruprecht who fired into the side netting.

United thought they took the lead in the 14th minute when Sam Murray’s wide free-kick caused major pinball in the box before the ball was bundled in by Tyler Fredricson but the goal was ruled out for a foul.

City went close three minutes later with some good work down the left-hand side resulting in a pullback for Jaden Heskey who saw his effort bounce off the post.

United had a big chance to go in front in the 31st minute when Max Oyedele played an excellent through ball to Norkett but the striker fired just wide.

City went in front a minute late when Whittingham picked out O’Reilly on the edge of the box and the midfielder beat his man and fired into the net.

The Red Devils spurred a huge chance to equalise in the 44th minute when Murray broke down the left and drilled a low pass through the box to Williams who fired over from close range.

United piled on the pressure in the second half and got a deserved equaliser in the 63rd minute when Williams pinched the ball from Isaac Smith and drove into the box before firing home.

They turned the game around five minutes later when Fredricson whipped a cross into Norkett who produced a stunning header into the top corner.

United were reduced to 10 men in the closing stages when Kingdon went sliding through the back of Whittingham with his studs raised and was shown a straight red card as a result.

United were awarded a penalty in the 89th minute when substitute Victor Musa drew a foul from George Murray-Jones in the box and Nolan tucked the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.

City pulled a goal back in stoppage time when the ball deflected up in the air and was brought down fantastically by Whittingham before he slotted home to make it a nervy ending.
