Manchester City U18s earn comeback win at Stoke City

[Manchester City 2022]

Matthew Whittingham was the star of the show as Manchester City came from behind to beat Stoke City 3-1 in the U18 Premier League North.

The midfielder was moved to left-back for this match but still managed to set up goals for Justin Oboavwoduo and Joel Ndala to increase his lead at the top of the assist charts.

Adam Watson put Stoke ahead in the first half before Farid Alfa-Ruprecht equalised for City after the break. The goals from Oboavwoduo and Ndala completed the turnaround and saw City collect the three points.

Stoke took the lead in the 16th minute when they kept the ball alive after City thought they had cleared it and Oliver Challinor found Watson who turned and fired a powerful snapshot into the back of the net.

After a below-par first-half performance, City got the dream start to the second half scoring just one minute after the interval to draw level.

The goal came in scrappy fashion when Stoke failed to deal with Nico O’Reilly’s cross which scrambled its way through to Alfa-Ruprecht at the far post who squeezed it into the net from a tight spot.

City went in front in the 60th minute when Matthew Whittingham rolled the ball in behind for Oboavwoduo who placed it into the bottom corner for his 7th goal of the season in all competitions.

They doubled their lead two minutes later with Whittingham at the heart of the move again, this time collecting the ball out wide and playing it inside to Ndala who fired home from inside in the box.

Stoke played well in the first half but failed to recover from the blow of conceding early in the second. They nearly pulled a goal back in the 65th minute however when their trialist striker went through but he was denied by a smart stop.

City pushed for the rest of the second half but were unable to grab any more goals. The victory sees them climb up to second in the table.
