Spoils shared between Sunderland and Manchester City

A wonder strike from Will Cain was enough for Sunderland to maintain their unbeaten home record in the U18 Premier North as they drew 1-1 with Manchester City.

Cain produced a stunning effort from 20 yards out to put the Black Cats ahead before Emilio Lawrence equalised for City to earn them another point from a losing position.

Sunderland came into this game top of the table while City sat three points behind them in second with the opportunity to overtake the Black Cats with a victory.

Sunderland took the lead in the 30th minute when Ben Middlemas played the ball out to Cain who released a stunning strike into the top corner from outside the box.

City went close to an equaliser in the 39th minute when Lawrence worked himself some space in the box and forced a good save from Matt Young in the Sunderland goal.

They levelled the game a minute later when Nico O’Reilly collected the ball in his own half before driving to the edge of the Sunderland box and rolling through Lawrence who slotted a first-time effort into the bottom corner.

Sunderland had a huge chance to go back in front in the 76th minute when they broke down the City left and drilled a low cross to substitute Will Dowling who saw his effort denied by a sensational last-ditch block.

The Black Cats had another opportunity five minutes later when Tom Watson found some space in the box to get a shot away but he was denied by George Murray-Jones.

The point means Sunderland maintain their three-point lead at the top of the U18 Premier League North while City remain in second place.
