A second-half strike from Daniel Gore handed Manchester United a 1-0 victory over leaders Sunderland in the U18 Premier League North.

The midfielder’s goal ensured United rounded off 2022 with a win and handed Sunderland just their second defeat of the season.

Sunderland came into the game two points clear at the top of the table with United 10 points below them in eighth. Although, United have three games in hand on the Black Cats.

United had the better of a quiet first half where neither side was able to force the opposition keeper into serious action.

The closest chance of the half fell to the Red Devils when Ethan Wheatley got on the end of a cross and volleyed a first-time effort towards goal which was saved by Dan Cameron.

United went close to taking the lead early in the second half when half-time substitute Manni Norkett broke in behind and drilled a low effort which was well saved.

Sunderland went close in the 57th minute when Tom Wooster came out to clear the ball but sliced it to Will Dowling who attempted to loop the ball into the empty net from thirty yards but his effort went narrowly over.

The Red Devils spurred a huge chance to open the scoring in the 68th minute when Daniel Gore forced a brilliant save for Cameron following a corner and the rebound fell to Adam Berry who fired over from close range.

Sunderland went close three minutes later when substitute Mason Cotcher got on the end of a cross from Ethan Moore and flicked an effort towards goal but he was denied by a great stop from Wooster.

United took the lead in the 75th minute when Ethan Williams pinched the ball high up the pitch and picked out Gore who sliced his first effort but got on the end of it himself and slotted the ball past Cameron.

The victory moves United up to third in the table on goal difference with three games in hand on Sunderland and second-place Manchester City.
