David Obou has signed his first professional contract with Crystal Palace. Obou is versatile as he can play on both wings, but can also operate as a number 10.

He has represented England at youth level and made eight appearances in the U18 Premier League last season, scoring one goal. He also made two appearances in the U18 Premier League Cup, where he scored against Manchester City in a 2-2 draw.

However, Obou has yet to feature this season as an injury has kept him out of contention. This has been a setback for the youngster, especially considering the likes of Bayern Munich and PSV were reportedly interested in him in the summer.

Speaking to the Crystal Palace website, Obou said: “I’m very proud. I’ve been working towards this achievement [of becoming a professional footballer] and it’s good to be here. It’s a reminder that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Obou has been at Crystal Palace for over 10 years and is known for his dribbling abilities and flair in attack.

The young winger posted on Instagram of his latest achievement stating: ‘First professional contract with Crystal Palace”

Natural comparisons can be made with the likes of Michael Olise, who has been a shining light for the Palace first team this season. Obou’s close control and direct style of play is like that of Olise.

Before the season, the Guardian put Obou in an article listing the 20 best talents in the Premier League. They cited his goal against Manchester City in the U18 Premier League Cup as an example of the talent Obou has at his disposal. This goal was a curled left-footed shot into the bottom corner, highlighting his goalscoring capabilities.

The focus for the young Palace player now will be to recover from his long-term injury, so that he can fulfil his potential in the years to come.
