FA Youth Cup holders Manchester United were frustrated and defeated by an organised Stoke City side who booked their place in the fifth round.

After 56 minutes, Josh Bickerton’s left footed free kick struck the wall which redirected the shot into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead.

Stoke’s best chance of the first half came as a dangerous cross from Bickerton found Nathan Lowe in the area, but his header was saved by Harrison.

Maxi Oyedele was impressive throughout for the visitors with some fantastic touches at times.

There was a big chance for United just before the break as Victor Musa’s shot from six yards was blocked by Jake Griffin to prevent the away side from taking the lead.

Just past the hour mark, Oyedele drove forward and shot from the edge of the area to force a good save from Tommy Simkin.

Simkin was excellent for the potters as he was called into action several times but defended his goal well.

In the 68th minute, United skipper Dan Gore weaved between the Stoke defenders but pulled his shot wide of the near post.

Following them taking the lead, Stoke frustrated the current holders with resolute defending in the second half.

The home side had a few chances to put the game to bed later in the game, but United managed to keep them out.

In the 89th minute Jack Kingdon struck a shot over the bar from inside the box as Stoke continued to hold onto their lead.

The young potters eased past Blackpool in the third round winning 5-1, however lost 4-2 in their most recent league match against Derby County. United found themselves on a hot streak of form, having won their previous four games. They beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in round three.

Next up, Stoke take on Newcastle United in U18 Premier League action on the 21st of January. Also in the U18 Premier League, Manchester United travel to Blackburn Rovers on the 14th.
