SGS College defeat Newcastle Eagles Academy to end streak of losses in the EABL

SGS College 84 – 55 Newcastle Eagles Academy

Led by Callum Smart, SGS ended their poor run of form with a big win over Newcastle Eagles Academy.

The hosts came into the game off the back of a 79-116 loss to Derby as they found themselves in poor form. Like their opponents, Newcastle also suffered defeat last time out where they lost 86-58 to Myerscough.

Cameron Watson was on fire in the first quarter for SGS, showing his speed and ability to finish on a fast break as well as forcing turnovers and making steals.

Callum Smart produced a big-time block in the first and made his mark on the game with his ability to grab rebounds on both ends of the floor. His side led 20-9 at the close of the first quarter.

A big three pointer from Hassan Mahmood galvanised his team in the second as he extended SGS’s lead to 12.

For the visitors, Joe Sheeran hustled to force a turnover and finished through the foul at the bucket.

Newcastle found some rhythm in the second quarter and a nice three pointer from Sheeran cut the SGS lead to eight to finish the first half.

Towards the end of the third, Smart threw it down on one end and made a block on the other in a dominant showing from the big man. He ended the game with 22 points.

Following an entertaining third quarter, and despite Newcastle’s best efforts, SGS continued to hold a healthy lead over the visitors. Going into to the fourth at 55-42.

Favour Ajayi made back-to-back layups with the second involving an excellent spin move as Newcastle fought hard in the fourth.

Joe Moss showed his consistent outside shooting and knocked down three threes in a matter of minutes as SGS began to run away with the game.

SGS saw out the win and ended their loss streak in style, with the game ending 84-55.

Next up for the hosts is a trip to Sheffield College, where they will be looking to rekindle the kind of form they were in earlier in the season. Newcastle will host Derby in the next round of EABL fixtures.
