Chelsea have completed the signing of Jimmy-Jay Morgan from Southampton for a fee of £6m.

The highly-rated youngster made the switch from south coast to west London following his under-the-radar deadline day move to join Chelsea from Southampton. According to Italian transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, the striker put pen to paper on a three-and-half year deal with the Blues.

Morgan had scored 27 goals for Southampton’s Under-16’s, before his promotion to the Under-18’s where he has contributed to 13 goals. His performances earned him the right to be part of the match day for the Southampton first team.  He was named on the bench for Southampton’s 3 – 1 defeat against Brighton on Boxing Day – he was also part of the first team’s match day squads for both domestic cups. Although, he has yet to make his Southampton debut.

Southampton opted to sell the youngster after it became apparent that he would not sign a new deal at St Mary’s.

Southampton manager Nathan Jones admitted that Jimmy-Jay Morgan wasn’t ready to break into Southampton’s first team but he wished him all the best for his future following his move to Chelsea.

He was recently asked about Morgan and his thoughts on the striker’s transfer decision at a press conference, explaining to reporters: “Jimmy was a young, really talented player for us. We’d like to keep all of our talented players but it got to a point where we weren’t able to do that. He goes with our blessing.”

Jimmy-Jay Morgan has made seven appearances for England at under-17. He made his debut last summer in a friendly match against the Faroe Islands. He has scored six goals for England U17s since then.

Chelsea’s head of youth development and recruitment Jim Fraser praised the signing of Morgan and told the club’s official website: ‘In signing Jimmy-Jay we have added a player with good potential to our Academy squads. His ability marks him out as an exciting striker and we are delighted to he has chosen Chelsea for this next, important stage of his development.’
