Victor Musa scored a brace as Manchester United beat Derby County 5-2 in a thoroughly entertaining U18 Premier League North clash.

James Scanlon opened the scoring for United before Musa added a second. Dajaune Brown pulled one back for Derby but Musa netted his second shortly after to restore the two-goal advantage.

In the second half, James Nolan and Ethan Williams added to United’s tally before Carlos Richards pulled another goal back for the Rams.

Manchester United came into this game off the back of a defeat to Nottingham Forest last week, ending their 10-game unbeaten league run.

Derby County entered this clash unbeaten in 2023, picking up two wins and four draws since the turn of the year to create a resurgence in form.

How it happened?

United opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Adam Berry played a lofted ball in behind the Derby defence for Scanlon. The midfielder chested it down brilliantly before rolling the ball calmly into the net.

The Red Devils doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Nolan flicked the ball through for Victor Musa who went around the goalkeeper and slotted it in past the defender on the line.

Derby pulled one back five minutes later when Adebayo Fapetu played Cameron Ashia in behind. The forward calmly rolled the ball across the box for Brown who finished into the bottom corner.

United almost got a third in the 42nd minute when Josh Shattell gave the ball straight to Jaydan Kamason who chipped it back over the keeper only to be denied by a goal-line clearance from Daniel Cox.

It was three, two minutes later when Kamason played an excellent ball in behind for Musa who hit a first-time effort on the half-volley to grab his second of the game.

The home side extended their lead in the 53rd minute in stunning fashion when the ball came into the feet of Nolan who struck an incredible half-volley off the post and in from outside the box.

United scored a fifth in the 66th minute when substitute Sekou Kaba played a ball across the box for Williams who shifted it onto his left foot and fired in his fifth league goal of the season.

The Rams grabbed a late consolation in the 87th minute when substitute Billy Gough rolled through Richards who fired into the top left corner.

Derby won a penalty a minute later when Louis Jackson was judged to have been too aggressive in his aerial challenge. Substitute Lennon Wheeldon stepped up to take it but Elyh Harrison denied him with a brilliant stop.

The victory for United keeps them third in the table whilst the defeat sees Derby fall back down to 12th.
