Mate Antunovic netted the winner as Hajduk Spilt produced a huge upset to beat Manchester City 2-1 and knock them out of the UEFA Youth League.

Hajduk become the first Croatian side to reach the quarter-finals since Dinamo Zagreb in 2019 thanks to goals from Roko Brajkovic and Mate Antunovic.

Oscar Bobb pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time but it proved not to be enough for City who were reduced to 10 men when Finley Burns was dismissed in the second half.

Hajduk Split qualified for the last 16 by beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in the playoff round after qualifying through the domestic champions path.

Manchester City went unbeaten in the group stages with four wins and two draws to qualify top of Group G and go straight into the draw for the round of 16.

What Happened?

The Croatians took the lead in the 23rd minute when George Murray-Jones came out of his box to clear a long ball but only got it as far as Brajkovic who brilliantly chipped it back over him and into the empty net.

They doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Antunovic broke into the box, beat his man and fired a powerful effort in at the near post for his second of the competition.

City pulled a goal back shortly before half-time when Carlos Borges drove to the by-line and pulled back for Bobb who drilled a low effort into the bottom corner.

City’s afternoon went from bad to worse when Burns saw red for a second bookable offence in the 82nd minute.

The defender was unhappy with a challenge from Jere Vrcic and shoved him to the ground in retaliation which saw both players receive a yellow card but marching orders quickly followed for Burns.

City got a huge chance to equalise in stoppage time when the ball fell kindly for Will Dickson in the box but Mateo Juric-Petrasilo stepped in with a sensational challenge to pinch the ball from Dickson as he went to shoot.

The victory means Hajduk Split will travel to the winner of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain in the quarter-finals in two weeks time.
