U18 Premier League: Manchester United & Stoke City share spoils

Tommy Simkin was in inspired form to earn Stoke City a 0-0 draw with Manchester United in the U18 Premier League North.

Simkin made multiple important saves to shut out the United attack and earn his clean sheet to ensure the Potters left Carrington with a share of the points.

Manchester United came into this clash with just one loss in their last 13 league matches. They fell victim to a late comeback from Leeds United in a 3-3 draw last time out.

Stoke City have had a very up-and-down season but entered this game off the back of a 2-0 win away at Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

What Happened?

United almost took the lead after seven minutes when Ethan Wheatley checked back inside the box to make space for a shot but he was denied by a great stop from Tommy Simkin.

The Red Devils had the better of the first half but a resilient Stoke defence kept them at bay, denying them any more clear-cut opportunities before the break.

United went close in the 52nd minute when Shea Lacey stepped up to take a free kick from around 20 yards out which he whipped around the wall but Simkin got down well to tip it out from the bottom corner.

Stoke had a chance to take the lead five minutes later when the ball set up perfectly for Adam Watson to strike on the half-volley from outside the box but Elyh Harrison saved his effort brilliantly.

The home side went close again in the 73rd minute when substitute Gabriele Biancheri pinched the ball on the edge of the box before driving forward and striking at goal only to be denied by another stunning save from Simkin.

United almost won it in the 10th minute of stoppage time when Simkin punched away a corner as far as Adam Berry who lashed a volley back towards goal but Simkin was there again to tip it over.

Despite 102 minutes being played neither side managed to make the breakthrough resulting in the game finishing goalless and the points being shared.
