Barking Abbey defeat Myerscough College to be crowned 2023 EABL Champions

Barking Abbey has been crowned the 2023 EABL Champions after defeating fellow number one seed Myerscough College at the National Basketball Performance Centre.

The championship win is their fifth as they cemented themselves as the most successful team in the competition’s history.

Moziah King-Danchie was named EABL Finals MVP thanks to his 16 points, four rebounds, five assists and a block.

Ignar Juskevicius also had a great game scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. As well as producing a show stopping slam dunk in the fourth quarter.

Dayvantia Campbell-Deeble impressed for the runners-up scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Myerscough defeated Canterbury Academy in the Elite Eight and then The Manchester Magic Academy in the Final Fours. This followed an excellent regular season, ending with a record of 12-2.

Barking had a near perfect regular season record of 11-1 going into the play-offs. They continued their dominance into the post season, seeing off Derby and current holders Charnwood to reach the final.

First Half

Abbey enjoyed success in the paint and dominated the boards early on, grabbing rebounds on the offensive end helped see them into the first interval up 21-16.

Daniel Azancot made the first three of the game to tie things up early in the second quarter but Barking quickly responded to retake a narrow lead.

Myerscough’s three point shooting improved in the second with Azancot drilling another ranged shot, this time from way downtown. Emmanuel Yeboah and Euan Birch also contributed from beyond the arc.

It was a scrappy second quarter with the lead changing hands on several occasions, but it was the Southern side that led 39-36 at half time.

Barking edged the score thanks to an important three with 39 seconds to go by King-Danchie.

Second Half

The South’s regular season MVP Nedas Cholevinskas got his side going in the third quarter with his first three of the game and followed it up with a tough finish at the bucket in the very next play. He finished with a game high 17 points.

A Birch three pointer slowed Barking’s momentum as they came out firing in the third where they led by as many as 15 at one stage.

Abbey continued to lead heading into the final quarter after scoring double what their opponents managed in the third. Giving Myerscough plenty of work to do as they trailed 61-47.

The Northern side showed desire to get back into the game and scored five points in quick succession to cut Barking’s lead down to nine.

Barking forced their opponents into shot clock violations and difficult shots with their tight defence as the clock ticked down.

To go with his double double, Juskevicius stole the ball at half court and threw it down over the defender on the fastbreak in a fantastic highlight play.

The showtime dunk took the wind out of Myerscough and Barking saw out the game, winning 75-60 to become the 2023 EABL Champions.
