James McConnell grabbed a goal and an assist as Liverpool finished off their U18 Premier League North season in style with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United.

McConnell opened the scoring after 57 seconds before Louie Koumas shortly added a second. Elijah Gift netted a third after the break for the Reds before Lucas Pitt turned the ball into his own net.

Liverpool took the lead inside the first minute of the game when Callum Scanlon broke down the left and floated a cross into the box for James McConnell who arrived late into the box and headed home.

The Reds doubled the lead five minutes later with Scanlon again the provider, this time playing a long ball forward for Koumas to chase. The striker broke in behind the defence and calmly slotted past the on-rushing keeper for his 12th league goal of the season.

Newcastle almost pulled one back on the stroke of halftime when Josh Donaldson broke in behind the defence and pulled the ball across for Darren Palmer. His effort was denied by a brilliant last-ditch block from Pitt.

Liverpool started the second half brightly and extended their lead in the 52nd minute when McConnell released substitute Gift down the right who cut inside onto his left foot and rolled the ball into the far corner.

The Magpies pulled a goal back in the 77th minute when substitute Shaun Mavididi played Dylan Charlton down the left who drilled a low cross into the box which flicked off Pitt and into his own net.

The Reds finished what has been a mixed U18 Premier League campaign on a high. The win secured them a midtable finish in the table.

The season is not yet over for Newcastle, they travel to Nottingham Forest next week who they beat 3-0 in the reverse four weeks ago.
