Sam Murray signs first professional contract with Manchester United

Manchester United’s U18s left-back, Sam Murray, has signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils.

The 18-year-old left-back, who joined Manchester United from Huddersfield Town, has made significant progress at the club. He played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s successful FA Youth Cup run, helping his side secure a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in the 2021-22 cup final.

Murray has amassed 46 appearances for the U18s side, scoring six goals and providing three assists for Manchester United. He also featured in 17 matches for Mark Dempsey’s U21s side during the 2022-23 season, his debut season in U21s football. One of his notable matches was against rivals Liverpool, which ended in a 2-2 draw last September. Murray gained valuable experience in men’s football during the season, participating in all five of Manchester United U21s Papa Johns Trophy fixtures.

With a promising future ahead of him, Murray is eager to take the next steps in his football career. Manchester United senior coach Erik ten Hag has shown a penchant for promoting academy players to first-team training during pre-season, as seen at the start of the 2022-23 campaign. It is likely that he will continue this trend by inviting more young talents to join the first-team setup this summer.

Murray had the opportunity to train with the first-team squad during the winter training period amidst the World Cup. He also featured in friendly matches against Spanish sides Cadiz and Real Betis, playing 45 minutes in each game.

Looking ahead, Murray is expected to travel with the rest of the squad to the US for the upcoming pre-season tour, preparing for the 2023-24 season. This presents another significant opportunity for him to impress Erik ten Hag and stake his claim for further involvement with the first team.
