Manchester City’s Under-21 forward Carlos Borges has been named the Premier League 2 Player of the Season for 2022/23.

The Portugal U19 international was the leading scorer in PL2 Division 1 with 21 goals and also produced nine assists to help defending champions Man City to a record third consecutive title.

Speaking to City’s official website Borges said: “I’m really proud and honoured to win this award as the level of quality in Premier League 2 is so high,

“It has been a fantastic season for us as a squad and every single one of the guys has played a big part in our success and they are great to play alongside.”

Borges, who also won the PL2 Player of the Month award for February with three goals, has been delighted with City’s record-breaking season.

“It makes me proud,” he told the club’s official website after winning the title. “We’re part of the history books. Now, it’s about keeping going and doing it again next season. It’s a top feeling.”

The 19-year-old’s standout performance in his memorable season was his four-goal haul in the mini Manchester derby as City thumped rivals Manchester United 6-1.

Borges’ form was not just limited to PL2. The forward scored four goals in the UEFA Youth League including a hat-trick against Sevilla. He also scored four times in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Man City have now provided three consecutive winners of the PL2 Player of the Season award, with Borges following in the footsteps of last season’s winner James McAtee and the 2020/21 winner Liam Delap. Both of them have spent this season on loan in the Championship.

Borges was selected by a panel of the Premier League Football Development Department ahead of seven other nominees: Dominic Ballard (Southampton), Oscar Bobb (Man City), Reyes Cleary (West Bromwich Albion), Mateo Joseph Fernandez (Leeds United), Alfie Gilchrist (Chelsea), Adedire Mebude (Man City) and Jack Wells-Morrison (Crystal Palace).

The future is bright for Carlos Borges and he will be hoping to carry his incredible form into the new season as he continues to grow his budding career.
