West Ham United have officially announced the signing of Billy Bates on professional contract terms. Bates, who joined the Hammers from Norwich City in 2020, made an impressive recovery from injury and featured 14 times for the U18s side during the recently concluded 2022-23 season. As the team’s captain, he contributed two goals and played a pivotal role in securing the U18 Premier League South and FA Youth Cup titles.

Born and raised in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, Bates had previous stints with Leyton Orient and Norwich City before joining West Ham. Although his debut season with the U18s saw limited appearances, he unfortunately missed the entire 2021/22 campaign due to an ACL injury.

Bates made his much-anticipated comeback against Aston Villa in September, where he not only helped the team overturn a 2-0 deficit but also found the back of the net. He continued to impress by scoring in a 5-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, extending the U18s’ winning streak to six games in the Premier League South.

Billy Bates is the sixth young talent to secure a professional contract with West Ham this season, following the footsteps of Ollie Scarles, Callum Marshall, Gideon Kodua, Lewis Orford, and Ryan Battrum.

Expressing his excitement, Bates stated, “I’m absolutely buzzing to sign my professional contract. It’s a dream come true and a testament to the hard work I’ve put in. I’m grateful to my family for their support and I’m eager to prove myself in the upcoming season.”

West Ham’s Academy Manager, Kenny Brown, expressed his delight at Bates’ progress, highlighting his resilience and determination to overcome obstacles. Brown believes that Bates has the potential to have a successful career in Claret and Blue, and he congratulated him on his achievement.

Overall, the signing of Billy Bates on a professional contract is a significant milestone for West Ham United, and the club is optimistic about the promising talent he brings to the team.
