Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Everton U21 left-back Ishe Samuels-Smith for a fee close to £4m. The highly-rated 17-year-old has agreed a three-year deal with the Blues.

Samuels-Smith will be the London club’s second academy acquisition of the summer following 18-year-old winger Diego Moreira’s arrival from Benfica B. Chelsea have beaten off interest from Manchester City to secure the young defender’s signature.

The teenager featured 28 times in all competitions this season in what was his breakthrough campaign in Paul Tait’s U21 side. The defender also made 12 appearances for the Toffees’ U18s.

Samuels-Smith has been a part of the first team squad since September and made the bench on two occasions last season for Everton. Firstly in a 4-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Bournemouth on November 22.

The second time came in a 3-1 Premier League defeat to Fulham on April 15 where he received advice from Everton boss Sean Dyche.

The manager said: ‘Ishe, a young kid, is on the bench today and I said: “Brilliant day for you son because you’ll learn what it really is”. The good stuff always looks after itself.’

He has also represented England at Under-15, Under-16, and Under-17 level, and was named in the UEFA team of the tournament at the UEFA U17 European Championships this summer.

The defender joined Everton aged nine and has spent eight years rising through the ranks at Finch Farm. He has even been hailed ‘the next Leighton Baines’ by the Toffees faithful.

Samuels-Smith will now make the move to the capital to join up with his new Chelsea teammates to start the next chapter in his young career.
