Portuguese forward Carlos Borges has signed for AFC Ajax on a five-year deal for a fee of €20m (£17.2m) bringing an end to his time at Manchester City.

The 19-year-old, who will play under the name ‘Forbs’ at Ajax, leaves Manchester after nine years as part of City’s academy and becomes the fifth academy product to depart this window after James Trafford, Shea Charles, Adedire Mebude and Morgan Rogers

The Citizens have agreed a 20% sell-on clause and a buy-back option as part of the deal for the Portugal U19 International who also received interest from West Ham United and Nottingham Forest.

Borges is an electric and skillful winger who can score goals in a wide variety of ways as well as create opportunities for teammates. His pace and ability on the ball make him a nightmare for defences.

The forward first broke into the City U18s in the 20/21 season where he netted 13 goals in 22 U18 Premier League games. The following year he scored 11 goals in just 8 league games as well as breaking into the U21 setup.

Last campaign was where Borges really shone. He recorded 21 goals and 10 assists in 24 Premier League 2 matches which saw him win Player of the Season and the Golden Boot. He also featured prominently in City’s UEFA Youth League campaign, netting four goals in six matches.

The 19-year-old has 10 caps for Portugal U19s and was a key part of the squad that finished runners-up in this summer’s UEFA U19 European Championships.

Despite his incredible record at youth level, Borges never made a first-team squad for Manchester City and makes the move to the Eredivisie to try to consistently play senior football.

He said: “I was in Portugal when I was getting told that Ajax wanted me. They explained their project and how I would fit in. That’s what you want to hear as a player, I knew this was the right move for me.”

Ajax Director of Football Sven Mislintat said: “We had a lot of competition to sign Borges, it was close with other clubs, especially one club from the Premier League. But we could enter the race and Borges immediately understood who we are, what we stand for and what’s possible here.

Carlos Borges is a fantastic boy. He is lightning quick, he will be one of the fastest players in the Eredivisie for sure. I am quite happy to add him to our squad.”
