The second week of U18 Premier League football took place on Saturday, 19th August. In the south, Chelsea came from a goal down to beat Crystal Palace 2 – 1 to secure their first win of their opening game of the new season. West Ham United, Reading and Aston Villa also picked up significant wins. In the north, Derby County were involved in an eight-goal thriller as they defeated Newcastle United 5 – 3, and Lennon Wheeldon was the star of the show for the Rams. Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United and Wolves also won their respective matches.

The top performers from Matchday 2 of the U18 Premier League were:

Donnell McNeilly, Chelsea

Donnell McNeilly scored two late goals as Chelsea came from behind to win their first opening game of the season, securing a 2 – 1 result against London rivals Crystal Palace. McNeilly slid home from close range to draw his side level before scoring again in the 99th minute of stoppage time as he was in the right place to tuck away Murray-Campbell’s assist. Fresh off his goal for the Chelsea U21s last week against Blackburn Rovers, the 17-year-old attacker will hope to build on his performances in recent times to help his team in the coming weeks.

Rory Wilson, Aston Villa

Rory Wilson followed up on his hat-trick on the season’s opening day last week with a brace at the weekend as Aston Villa continued their 100% winning record with a 2 – 0 win against Southampton. The Scotland youth international tapped home a rebound in the 18th minute to give his side an early lead, and then he added a second in the 81st minute to wrap up the win for Villa. Rory Wilson has scored five goals in two league appearances for Aston Villa this season.

Lennon Wheeldon, Derby County

Lennon Wheeldon scored two goals and got an assist as Derby County won 5 – 3 against Newcastle United and their first league of the season. Lennon Wheeldon scored nine league goals last season and has two goals to his name this season. The striker will hope to increase last season’s goal tally, and he will be an essential player to count on if Daniel Maye’s side are going to improve on their 7th-place finish from last season.

Zack Stritch, Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers won 3 – 0 against Sunderland convincingly to stay unbeaten in the U18 Premier League North. Zack Stritch followed up by scoring on the season’s opening game with a brace and an assist to continue his form for his side. Zack Stritch has already exceeded his goal tally from last season (1 goal) and will hope to add more goals to his name as the season progresses.
