2022-23 semi-finalists AC Milan and former champions Real Madrid and Barcelona off to winning starts

Last season’s semi-finalists AC Milan, who former player Ignazio Abate coaches, got their group campaign off to a brilliant start as they thumped debutants Newcastle United 4 – 0. A brace from Francesco Camarda and goals from Chaka Traore and Kevin Zeroli sealed the win for the Italian side. 

2020 Champions Real Madrid came from behind to defeat another debutant side, Union Berlin, 2 – 1. Cesar Palacios scored the winning goal in the 76th minute for the Spanish side. 

Barcelona got their campaign off to a winning start against Belgian side Royal Antwerp, winning by two goals to one.

Last season’s history maker, Adrian Nino off the mark in this season’s competition

Adrian Nino who made history by becoming the first player to score in all six group-stage matches in the UEFA Youth League last season. The 19-year-old Spanish attacker got a brace and his 10th UEFA Youth League goal in total as he helped Atletico Madrid secure a 2 – 0 convincing win against Lazio.

Manchester City only English side to win on the opening week

Manchester City romped to a 5 – 2 victory against Serbian side Red Star Belgrade as they began their campaign in style. A brace from Emilio Lawrence, followed by goals from Will Dickson, Kane Taylor and Jaden Heskey, completed the demolition of the Serbian side. Manchester City’s neighbours Manchester United lost 2 – 0 to Bayern Munich, and Arsenal, who made their first return to the competition since 2016-17, lost their opening game 2 – 1 against PSV.
