Real Madrid’s Hugo Gonzalez was crowned Most Valuable Player at the opening Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation qualifier in Podgorica, Montenegro.

The Spanish talent averaged 13.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals in his second consecutive MVP performance, to go with last year’s award from ANGT Munich.

As well as winning the MVP trophy and the tournament, the 6’6 forward was also named alongside teammate Ismaila Diagne in the All-Tournament team in Podgorica.

The Tournament

Gonzalez and co. breezed past the opposition on their way to the final, they opened their tournament account with a 92-66 dismantling of Umana Reyer Venice with the MVP providing 17 points, his highest of the campaign.

A day later, Real Madrid took on Cedevita Olimpja Ljubljana who they defeated in a blow out 56-90 victory and the Spanish side continued their domination into the evening, where they saw off Bayern Munich with the score reading 60-84.

Madrid faced U18 Next Generation Team Podgorica in the final, a select team made up of some of the best young European talent whose teams are not directly involved in ANGT.

Despite facing foul trouble, Gonzalez dropped 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in Madrid’s emphatic comeback win in the final as they went on a 2-17 run in the fourth quarter to give them the chance to defend their ANGT crown in Berlin.

While the 18-year-old didn’t shoot his best from beyond the arc (23.8%), Gonzalez will be pleased with his efficiency from two-point range where he made 63.6% of his shots as well as making 75% of his free throws across the four games.
