The last round of the group stages of the U18 Premier League Cup has concluded, and we look at the talking points from Match Day 3.

Four-goal hero Ethan Wheatley helps Manchester United demolish Southampton

Ethan Wheatley took his tally to five goals in three U18 Premier League Cup appearances for Manchester United as they emphatically won 5 – 1 away to Southampton. Adam Lawrence’s side secured top spot in Group F with 6 points as they progressed to the quarter-finals after two wins and a loss in the group stage.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are the only sides to progress to the knockout stage with 100% winning records

Chelsea secured a convincing 3 – 1 win against Blackburn Rovers to progress as group winners with 9 points. Likewise, Aston Villa emphatically won 3 – 0 against Nottingham Forest to progress as group winners with 9 points. Aston Villa talisman Rory Wilson scored a brace against Nottingham Forest, which took his tally to four goals in the competition.

Arsenal through to the next round as the best runner-up

Jack Wilshere’s side progressed to the quarter-finals of the U18 Premier League Cup as the best runner-up. Arsenal finished second in Group B with West Ham United on 7 points. Still, it was enough for the Young Gunners to progress as they accumulated the most points from all the other teams that also finished second in their respective groups. Arsenal’s 2 – 1 vital win against Derby County secured a passage to the knockout phase.

Defending champions Tottenham Hotspur bow out of the tournament

Tottenham Hotspur’s group stage campaign ended with a win and two defeats, which wasn’t enough for them to progress to the knockout stage. Their last group game ended in a 5 – 0 loss against Barnsley as their disappointing title defence ended. Four goals from Fabio Jalo and a Rafael Monteiro goal helped Barnsley achieve their first win of the competition.
