The British Basketball League’s Surrey Scorchers announced the signing of Great Britain U18s Men’s Player of The Year Nedas Cholevinskas.

Cholevinskas joins Surrey following a spell in Lithuania with NKL side Rytas Vilnius II, where he penned a three-year deal last September.

The talented 18-year-old was the driving force in Barking Abbey’s fifth EABL title win, where he averaged 15 points and 7.8 rebounds and won Southern Conference MVP. As well as featuring in the NBL Division 1.

His excellent performances in the EABL booked him a spot at the HoopsFix All Star Classic U19 game, where he was named MVP after dropping 21 points and grabbing eight boards.

The 6’5 small forward also had the honour of representing Great Britain at U18 level, as he took part in the 2023 European Championship averaging 14.9 points and 6.9 rebounds in Division B.

Following his departure from Rytas Vilnius, Cholevinskas gave EliteScholars his reasonings behind the decision. He said:

“It just wasn’t a very good environment, so I left, I didn’t think it was the right fit for me. I didn’t feel like I was getting better, Surrey is helping me achieve the next level. I feel like I’ve gotten better already, and I’ve only been here around a week.”

The move means Cholevinskas is registered under the Surrey Scorchers franchise umbrella, therefore he can play for first team in the BBL as well as their affiliate club Cobham Cobras.

Scorchers’ head coach Lloyd Gardner told the club website: “We are delighted with Nedas joining our program. He is a player who has proved himself as a high-level prospect through his play with the Great British Junior National teams and in NBL.”

Surrey, who currently sit 8th in the BBL, are in action at 4:30pm GMT today against Bristol Flyers and again on Thursday where they will take on the Caledonia Gladiators.
