18-year-old youth academy prospect Michael Golding is on the verge of signing for newly-promoted Premier League side Leicester City for £4m. He has already agreed to a four-year deal with the Foxes, and this signing is part of a swap deal following Chelsea’s reported agreement to sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City.

Michael Golding joined Chelsea in 2018 from AFC Wimbledon at the end of his Under-12 season. He made his U18s league debut for Chelsea in September 2021 as a starter in a 3-0 victory against Birmingham City.

On July 1, 2023, he was awarded his first professional contract with Chelsea ahead of the 2023/24 season under the stewardship of Chelsea U18s coach Hassan Sulaiman.

Golding can play any midfield role, whether defensive or attacking, and he is very disciplined out of possession. Most of his good performances came in central midfield, and he was part of the Chelsea U18s side that won the U18 Premier League South. He made 14 appearances for Hassan Sulaiman’s side throughout the 2023-24 campaign. Golding also started 13 times and made eight substitute appearances for the Chelsea U21s.

He was given a debut for the Chelsea men’s team as he came on as a late substitute in an FA Cup third-round win over Preston.

International Duties

Michael Golding has represented England at the U16, U17, and U18 levels. He captained the England U17 team that competed at the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championships, where they finished as quarter-finalists. However, England had to play a FIFA U-17 World Cup play-off against Switzerland, and he got himself on the scoresheet that day to help England defeat the Swiss 4-2 to qualify for the U-17 World Cup.

He was also part of the team in the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia, where England was knocked out in the round of 16 stage by Uzbekistan.

The Future

Golding is on the verge of joining Leicester City, managed by Steve Cooper, who has a considerable track record of coaching younger players from his time coaching the England U16s and U17s. He also led the England U17s to their first World Cup title in 2017, so Michael Golding will hope to impress Steve Cooper to earn his first Premier League debut and continue his footballing development.
