Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has lit up the Euros and became the youngest player to score in the history of the tournament.

The incredibly young winger has etched his name into yet another history book as he scored a wonder goal against France to help send Spain into the final of Euro 2024. It was a goal that will be remembered forever in the minds of football fans but it is even more impressive given he is just 16 years old.

Yamal picked the ball up deep in the opposition half and was stopped in his tracks whilst deciding where to go with the ball. He quickly decided that the best option was to shoot and he shot with his left, curling the ball over Mike Maignan to glance it off the post and into the back of the net.

His performances in La Liga this season showed the world that he was one to watch for the future but this goal against France has shown that he is already emerging as a superstar of modern football. He had performed well in the tournament, setting up three goals and creating numerous chances, but this was a moment of significant magnitude.

He had already become the youngest player to play in the tournament and has now become the youngest player to score a goal. He goes above names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Johan Vonlanthen, and Wayne Rooney (who had also set the record against France at Euro 2004).

Recently, Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, released a picture of a photoshoot from 2007 where Lamine was photographed with none other than Lionel Messi for a calendar to raise money for the global charity Unicef which sponsored Barcelona at the time. It’s funny how the universe throws things like this up, isn’t it?

Yamal is so young that one of his teammates, Jesus Navas, had already been playing professional football for four years by the time Yamal was born. In fact, Navas is older than Yamal’s father who is 32 years old, making him six years younger than Navas.

It is clear to see that Yamal is destined for stardom. A player being this good at 16 years old is something that hasn’t been seen since Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene for Everton at the end of the 2001-02 season. This goal is surely the first of many incredible moments that will happen in this young player’s career.
